We were dating for about three months before my now husband sat me down and said, “Listen, I will always be a coach. I need you to be ok with that.”
Referring to yourself as a coach's wife is a big deal. I mean, not everybody wears shirts with their husband's career plastered on the front with pride. So why do coaches' wives? What is it about their husband's jobs that make the wives stand up and claim to be a part of that?
This episode unpacks all of that and more. We talk in the beginning about my relationship with my husband. He told me he was always going to be a coach, but I didn't think about how that would always make me a coach's wife. With time I learned how to step into that in a way that was unique for me, and I encourage you to do the same!
Key Points in this episode:
- The difference between being my husband's wife and the coach’s wife
- The importance of both roles
- What does the Bible say about us as coaches’ wives?
- Nurturing your marriage
- Being more than a coach’s wife
- Joining in community with other coaches wives
- The honor of being called “Coach’s Wife”
"We want to be coaches’ wives who embrace this life because we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that we were made for this."
Scriptures referenced in this episode:
- Romans 3:23
- Matthew 19
- Colossians 3:17
- Ephesians 2:10
Encouragement from this episode:
Is referring to yourself as a coach’s wife is a new concept? I hope this episode proved to you how much of an honor it is to be a coach’s wife and how it automatically places you in a unique category of women who understand your life and can validate your positive and negative feelings about it.
Is calling yourself a coach’s wife is second nature? You’ve fully embraced this calling on your life. I hope that this episode lit a fire in your soul because it reminded you how lucky you are to be married to a coach.
Does the title of “coach’s wife” has always make you cringe? I mean, you have a life of your own. You’re accomplishing your goals and have big aspirations in life. In the past when someone has called you “coach’s wife,” you’ve rolled your eyes and thought, “do they not see me? Do my dreams not matter?” Oh, sweet friend, I want to hug you so much right now. Hear me out today: YOU ARE MORE THAN JUST A COACH’S WIFE. I promise you, we see that. But, can I challenge you today to remind yourself that being a coach’s wife doesn’t mean that’s all there is to you? You are a unique individual with so much to offer this world. You are beautiful and smart and talented and worthy of pursuit. That’s what made you your coach’s wife to begin with. He saw that in you and, believe it or not, he doesn’t want you hiding behind his position on staff! He wants to see you shine and be happy and do what you were called to do. He also wants you to be proud to be a coach’s wife because he’s proud to have you by his side. If it helps, everytime someone calls you a coach’s wife, whisper to yourself “and so much more.” Because you are.
How does the concept that being a coach’s wife is a calling change our lives?
- We embrace our opportunities.
- We find our place.
- Lastly, we apply the fact that coaching is our calling by surrounding ourselves with support.
This week’s prayer:
My prayer for you this week is that you’ll stop fighting your role as a coach’s wife and learn to truly embrace it. I hope you’ll remember that as much as being a coach’s wife is awesome, it pales in comparison to being a sinner saved by grace. And I hope you’ll commit to joining a community of coaches’ wives like The Huddle so that you can go into the next season feeling so much more understood and supported.
